Okay so something that always catches me is the phrase "heavy riffs". Trust me when I say that enticing phrase, that I have something good for dat ass. This band was a great find for me some time ago, so I am resurrecting this album. With ex-members from the almighty Orange Goblin and Iron Monkey (YES!), this band is guaranteed to not put out anything shitty. It's a new take on instrumental... it's psych heavy without any vocals (with the exception of track 3 which features vocals from Eugene Robinson from Oxbow....sweet), which is rare these days. The first track immediately reeled me in...the heavy breathing going into a super catchy headbang. Steady and placed together all too well. Lots of good deep bass groove here as well. This really is a great, under-appreciated album and band. Get you some of this Capricornage.

craft - "fuck the universe"

WOW. Okay, so formerly known as Nocta and crossing over in 1998 to Craft, this band has really set a high standard for new black metal. Their first full-length I heard was "Terror Propaganda" and I was very impressed. It's hard for me to really like a lot of modern black metal because it seems overly monotonous and boring as fuck, honestly. But this record gave me some hope. Then, low and behold, they released "Fuck The Universe" and my head was completely decapitated. I am still in awe at how incredible this album is. A friend of mine captured my feelings best when he stated that this is what black metal is in its perfect form. It captures exactly what I look for in black metal. It is raw, riffalicious, and perfectly pieced together. This album is a juggernaut of modern black metal and I cannot recommend it enough!! DOWN...LOAD.

tragedy - "nerve damage"

one of the tightest and most passionate modern punk/hardcore/crust hybrids to date. their entire catalog of achievements rules but this album just stands out to me. "eyes of madness" has an incredibly catchy intro and just absolutey crushes. it sends chills up my spine, especially watching live footage. the pounding frustration, the dark and ominous anger that seethes from this record just does something to someone that can relate. there is nothing evasive about this... it is up front and pummeling. unforgiving. when shit's bad and the world seems to be ever-collapsing in on itself, i can't help but put this on and think "fuck it, i'm not the only one". tragedy knows how to do angry well. these guys are anything but poised. they are raw and shoot straight.

featuring j. mascis from dinosaur jr.... that was enough to gather my interest to begin with. but really, this record fucking rules! i love it. favorite notable tracks are the opening, "seer", and "black saint". but all around this record is a great piece of doom with an underlying beckon of pentagram (you'll really notice on "rip van winkle"). it's a great mix of 70's acid rock, psychedelia, downer rock, heavy metal, and doom. i worship the guitars here...reminiscent of sabbath and cathedral. the vocals are reminiscent of traditional doom and unique at that. one of my favorite albums, ever!

altar of plagues - "white tomb"

this irish avant-garde black metal band really hit the nail on the head with this release. they create dense, expansive and multi-textural black metal. they are a good reason why i still give modern black metal a chance at all. noticeable post-rock and atmospheric elements, combined with vocals that will consume and swallow, this album will be one of your new favorite modern black metal albums. no doubt.

dysrhythmia - "barriers and passages"

prog rock, heavy metal, a little bit indie, a little bit avant-jazz.. this philly instrumental band creates a pretty awesomely unique sound that is inherently addicting. after self-releasing their first CD "contradiction" in 2000, they have continued to perfect and progress in sound and talent. this is my favorite release of their's. listening to it actually makes me feel as if i am traveling through passages at warp speeds, slowing down, facing barriers, and breaking through. so, the album name completely fits if you ask me. with tracks like "luminous" calming you and soaring through you like a swarm of butterfies. provoking, simple, and a bit depressing. this is a great release.

fall of efrafa - discography

this UK band based around a re-imagining of the mythological and political overtones in the book "watership down" by richard adams, focusing their efforts in forwarding atheist/animal rights ideologies. it's like a perfect mix of tragedy idealism and in your face vocals meets the harmonic guitars of agalloch, fused with fast-paced hardcore tendencies and post-rock melody. if you're angry at the world yet appreciate it's beauty then i think this would be a good collection for you to relate to.
